Diversification is about reducing dependence on a single investment or risk factor. Simply owning more securities does not guarantee a diversified portfolio.

## Asset-Class Diversification

Equities, bonds, cash, property and other assets can respond differently to growth, inflation and interest rates. Combining them changes the portfolio's overall risk profile.

## Sector and Geographic Diversification

Spread exposure across industries and economies so that one company, sector or country does not dominate the outcome. Currency exposure should be considered alongside geographic allocation.

## Correlation Matters

Two holdings from different sectors can still move together. Correlation analysis helps test whether apparent diversification is actually reducing shared risk.

## Look Through Funds and ETFs

Different funds can own many of the same securities. Looking through the wrapper can reveal hidden overlap and concentration.

## Rebalancing

Market movements cause weights to drift. A rules-based review can keep the portfolio aligned with its intended structure while controlling turnover and costs.

## Use Portfolio Analytics

Asset allocation, correlation, volatility, drawdown and concentration analysis can show how diversified the portfolio really is.

## FAQ

### How many stocks are enough?

There is no universal number. The relevant question is whether the portfolio is diversified across the risks that matter.

### Can diversification reduce returns?

It can, because diversification is primarily a risk-management tool and reduces dependence on individual winners.

## Conclusion

Effective diversification spreads economic risk rather than simply increasing the number of holdings. Use allocation, correlation and concentration analysis to understand the portfolio you actually own.
